O2 Ireland Suck!

The iPhone is a great piece of equipment - it’s not as feature rich as my N95 - but it looks great and has a really sweet user interface. Add in the the iTunes functionality and you’ve got yourself the real iPod killer. Unless of course you happen to be in Ireland where O2 have the exclusive rights to distrubute the iPhone and are attempting to leverage that scarcity (i.e. screw the consumer).  Pat Phelan of Cubic Telecom has done the math and has been appearing on various TV and radio shows to inform the public and try and embarrass O2 into a U-turn. Check out his sums before you consider getting an iPhone through O2 Ireland.

Ever wanted to have an oracle of all human knowledge at your fingertips? Well now you can thanks to a young Irish developer, Patrick Collison. Patrick hacked together an offline Wikipedia reader for the iPhone over Christmas. I haven’t used it as I don’t have an iPhone but I’m going to have a quick look at the mongrel based Ruby version he used for debugging in development. I currently have a Nokia N95 and while I’ve very happy with it as a piece of hardware, I’m jealous of the iPhone users who get the coolest apps first. Lets be honest the iPhone looks a lot sexier too. Rather than just moan though I might take a look at the SDK for Nokia N95’s this weekend and see what would be required to get the nifty Wikipedia reader running on my N95.
